LkldNow
Nearly 100 people packed into the fellowship hall of New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in northwest Lakeland Tuesday evening to listen to the six candidates vying for three seats on the Polk County School Board.
While School Board members come from different areas in the district, they represent the entire county. These races will be decided on Aug. 20.
The forum was hosted by several nonpartisan groups: the Polk County chapter of the League of Women Voters, the NAACP Lakeland Branch, the Polk County Voters League and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority’s Omicron Kappa Omega chapter.
Six candidates are vying for three seats in the Aug. 20 election.

August 7, 2021 - With school beginning next week, Steven Elias, a parent from Winter Haven, came before the Polk County Commission Tuesday to share concerns about the COVID vaccine and his trouble ascertaining the right data to help make the best decisions for his children.
Local hospital officials have been pushing the vaccination since its roll-out in October. They have continued to promote the free and widely available shot to everyone 12 and older through the summer amid a recent surge in COVID cases and hospitalizations that's particularly impacting younger, non-vaccinated populations.
